Editorial

Summer is here, even if some of the recent weather has not been what we might expect! I'm sure many of you will be travelling to multi-day holiday events in the next few weeks, both in Wales and further afield. If you are going somewhere particularly unusual, I'd encourage you to tell the rest of us about it in the autumn - it's always interesting to contrast the way events are run abroad with our own.

Spring is the peak season for major events across the country, though the rapidly rising undergrowth spoils our local forests. I'm sure many of you enjoyed the physical and technical challenge of the JK, while the Harvester remains one of my annual favourites. Whilst it was run some time ago, this is also the first Points East since our own premier event, the East Anglian Championships, and a list of the local champions for 2004 can be found later - congratulations to all.

Following the AGM at Warren Wood we have a new committee which looks remarkably similar to the old one, though we do have some new representatives on BOF's committees following their restructuring - full details can be found in the minutes reproduced later. Finally, this autumn East Anglia is hosting two major events to look forward to - children from all over the country will converge on Sandringham for the British Schools' Championships, while the best youngsters from around Europe will be competing in the Junior European Cup. Both of these will need your assistance to run smoothly, as well as the opportunity to watch some top juniors in action.

I hope you have a good summer, especially in the forest.

Chairman's Chat

For this edition I am reproducing my annual report to the AGM at Warren Wood on June 27th. My apologies to those who attended and have therefore heard it all before. However, I feel it deserves a wider audience than the handful of stalwarts who turned out to support the committee.

Looking back to review the last 12 months' happenings, I realise what an active region we are and why I seem to be so busy. All clubs in the region have put on a good programme of events from small local events to badge events, each I hope successful in its own way. The geography of our region brings its own problems. It is often easier for some of our members to travel to events in neighbouring regions rather than within East Anglia. Many areas have a low population density and inevitably turnout is low compared to many more densely populated regions. An East Anglian Badge event attracts around the same number of competitors as colour-coded events elsewhere. The financial implications of this have sometimes proved difficult to get across to Head Office.

As a region we have organised the regional round of the CompassSport events. My thanks to all the officials and those who helped on the day. WAOC staged a superb Yvette Baker Final. NOR ran a successful East Anglian Championships. My congratulations to all 2004 Champions. Roger Stenson organised an enjoyable score event to coincide with the AGM. Plans are well under way for the Junior European Cup and British Schools Orienteering Championships, both to be hosted by the region in the autumn. Your help will be needed!

There have been individual successes in the forest. We had a number of Midland Champions. Alas no British Champions but Ed Kelleher should be congratulated on his second place in M18 and Helen Gardner for her 3rd place in W18 at the JK. International representation has been achieved by Helen Gardner for JWOC, Edward Louth & Suzy Robertson for Interland and Leanne Barnes for English Schools at the International Schools Meet. Suzy Robertson also represented England in the Senior Home International. We have also had 3 juniors selected for BOF summer tours - Edward Louth to Lagganlia, Jo West to Halden and Helen Gardner on the pre-JWOC tour. Jo West has also been selected for the Start Squad. Well done to all of them.

As a result of a Grade 2 Controllers Course in April, we now have 4 new Grade 2 Controllers. A great relief to our existing two who were in danger of serious overload! My thanks to Andrew Cordle and Peter Leverington for organising the day.

Development seems to be the key issue at the moment. I believe that the future of our sport depends on the success of these initiatives. The funding of Regional Development Officers by Sport England and the appointment of Jez Middleton to East Anglia is an exciting opportunity for us. Jez is not from a mainstream orienteering background but is a qualified Level 2 BOF Coach with a strong background in teaching orienteering to young people through his work over the past few years with outdoor centres and through D of E work in Norfolk. He has plenty of experience in committee work through canoeing and was the successful driver of an Awards 4 All bid for his canoe club which also led to increased participation and membership. And we need that for orienteering too! In my experience, we are very good at introducing newcomers to the sport. However, it is taking them on to become enthusiasts and more importantly volunteers that is more difficult. All clubs struggle to find enough helpers to run events and to fill committee posts. Our Junior Squad is struggling to find recruits at the younger end. We need to be able to offer more than an occasional run on a Sunday if we are to attract new members.

Ursula Oxburgh organised a Level 1 coaches training day. This proved extremely popular and was actually oversubscribed. But encouragingly, all clubs in the region had at least one delegate. My thanks to Ursula. Now it is up to clubs to use the skills of these people and encourage further progression up the coaching ladder. Currently we have no active club coach in the region, let alone a qualified Regional Coach. Our Junior Squad needs more access to good coaches. We need to be able to teach basic skills to newcomers and develop those of regular orienteers.

Thank you to all the committee for all their hard work and support throughout the year. Amazingly enough almost all are prepared to continue for a further year. However, Clive Tant and Andy Malley are standing down as Junior Squad Co-ordinators so special thanks to them for all their efforts in keeping the squad going during a difficult period. Finally, my thanks to you, the club orienteers who do so much to support the work of the region. I believe that we are unique in the level of co-operation that we achieve. Thank you and well done.

Bill Stevens Trophy 2004

[the Bill Stevens Trophy]

The Bill Stevens Trophy is awarded each year for services to the region. It is to provide recognition for the unsung heroes who work in the background to ensure the smooth running of our sport. This year's winner is John Ward who has a long history of planning, controlling and mapping for the region as well as being a long serving EAOA committee member, currently wearing the Treasurer's hat. In the last six months alone, he seems to have controlled an event monthly, remapped Sandringham for the British Schools and taken over as Chairman of NOR. Well done John!

East Anglian Champions

The East Anglian Championships for 2004 were held at the new area of Hockham on 28th March, shortly after the last Points East came out. Congratulations to all the winners who successfully negotiated the pingo ponds:

Junior Inter-Regional Championships

[East Anglia's JIRC team]
The East Anglian Junior Squad at the JIRC

At the end of June, a select group of East Anglian juniors headed north to Scotland to compete against other regions from across the country. The individual event on Saturday was held in poor weather on the sand dunes of Gullane, with our best results coming from the WAOC pair of Ed Louth and Helen Gardner, who were fifth in M14 and W18 respectively. The overnight team standings were close at the top, as there were joint leaders in Scotland and the West Midlands, with the North West just two points behind in third. East Anglia were in ninth place, suffering from not having had a full team in many classes.

[action from the JIRC relays]

The relays the following day were held at Callander Park, on spectator-friendly courses through both park and forest terrain. The highlight of the day from our point of view was Helen's run, which was the fastest girls' final leg by more than two minutes and pulled the EA team from ninth place to fourth following solid performances from Jo West (6th) and Sophie Louth (13th running up an age group). In the overall placings, North West overhauled the overnight leaders thanks to a dominant performance in the boys' relays, where they took both first and third places. Scotland were a close second and West Midlands third, while East Anglia maintained our overnight ninth place.

Junior World Championships

Not long after the JIRC, Helen Gardner travelled further afield to represent Great Britain at JWOC in Gdansk, Poland. Her best run was in the middle distance, where she finished 33rd with a time less than seven minutes behind the winner, and another good relay run saw her climb four places anchoring our second team.

The British highlight of the week was the performance of Alison O'Neil (NOC) who followed up 4th place in the middle distance with a bronze medal in the classic, our best ever individual performance at the event.

Junior European Cup - Help Wanted

EAOA in conjunction with CHIG are hosting the 2004 Junior European Cup from 8th-10th October. This is an international competition for M/W18's & 20's. The competition was originally started by a group of countries excluding the Scandinavians to provide experience for junior orienteers at this level. Those with longer memories than mine will know it as the Six Nations but these days has been extended to include some of the old eastern bloc.

Anyway this year it comes to Essex. The main event consists of a classic event on Saturday 9th in Epping East and relays on Sunday 10th in Hatfield Forest. We are also staging a sprint event in Harlow Town Park on Friday 8th. I am co-ordinating the event and have appointed the major officials. However, we do need helpers on the days. CHIG are largely taking care of the individual event but I need volunteers for the Sprint (start times from 4pm) and the relays, both of which should be good spectator sport. It is a good chance to see the cream of the European Juniors in action and no doubt some potential world champions. Undoubtedly the British team, which may well include at least one East Anglian, would appreciate some support.

If you are able to help in anyway over the weekend, I would really appreciate it. Please contact me on lynwest.ghh@tesco.net or 01206 322905. Further details of the event will appear on the website www.jec2004.info in due course.

Ampthill Chasing Sprint

WAOC's second attempt to bring the thrilling head-to-head competition of a chasing sprint to East Anglia's masses was held at Ampthill Park on 9th May, and looks set to become an annual event. While the park is quite small, it has a good mixture of open and wooded areas as well as a steep slope, so some challenging and spectator-friendly short courses could be planned.

In the Men's Open class, Rolf Crook (WAOC) built up a two minute lead in the prologue, ahead of the CUOC pair of Alan Elder and Ash Bown. Meanwhile in the Women's Open Helen Gardner (WAOC) headed Rosemary Dyer (CUOC) by a similar margin. The Veteran Men's class was a much closer competition, with Simon Errington (HH) leading Neil Humphries (WAOC) by seven seconds, with Clive Street (HH) just two seconds further behind.

The real fun at these events comes with the chase, of course. Nearly all of the competitors started within a ten minute period, and with the first 500m of the course visible from the start many had a target in sight in front of them. Both Rolf and Helen proved to be the class acts of the field and were able not only to maintain, but to extend, their leads in the Open classes. There were some closer finishes further back in the field, but few changes of position - catching up is one thing, getting past is another!

As expected after the prologue results, the Veteran Men's race proved the best spectacle, with Simon being pushed hard but hanging on to finish seven seconds ahead of Clive. The fastest time on the chase was recorded by Peter Haynes (SLOW), who closed the gap to the top three by a couple of minutes but for whom the finish came too soon. The Veteran Women's class was won comfortably by Nicola Gardner (WAOC), fastest in both rounds, while the Junior classes were won by Tim Street (HH) and Clare Woods (WAOC) in disappointingly small fields - I'm sure there must be more juniors out there who would enjoy the competitive element of this type of event.

Punt Orienteering

In June, WAOC members once again had the chance to take part in a punt orienteering competition on the river Cam. Originating from CUOC's traditional post exam event, the PuntO involves a race of parallel running and punting legs. This time, 5 or 6 people per punt had 6 legs, both running and punting, to split between themselves. This year I took over from Mark as organiser cum planner - he seems to have been stuck for many years with organising many CUOC and WAOC PuntOs, and there was some kind of grumble that he'd quite like to run it sometime, so what could I do?! Previous PuntOs have been planned on Coe Fen, a Cambridge parkland area frequently used for summer evening events, CUOC introductory events and other such events. This year we added Grantchester Meadows, a stretch of land alongside the river further south of Coe Fen; a riverside path was built here several years ago, which makes the area especially useful for something like a PuntO, where the river is such an integral part of it!

The controls in a PuntO are usually pieces of string collected by the competitors: it saves the organiser having to collect them but has the disadvantage of being slightly harder to find. Having put out the pieces of string the week before the event, the morning's preparation only required transporting four punts from Scudamore's, the hiring place, to the car park, where everyone else was meeting us.

Whilst waiting to meet them, clouds were ominously collecting in the distance (and Scudamore's staff were taking the cushions out of the touring punts) and we set off punting just as the rain started. Nevertheless, it was only a short shower and the sky cleared by the time we got to the car park, where the competitors arrived shortly. Next I handed out the maps to all teams so they could split the punting and running legs, taking into account the punting and running speeds of each team member.

1-2-3-go!!! After my very unimaginative countdown, everyone set off and there were some collisions straight away. Whilst first leg runners set off for a run around Coe Fen, the punts started just inside a shallow side shoulder of the Cam. Two managed to get away safely whilst the other two remained stuck in a collision and spent a while getting themselves out of the bushes.

[How not to punt!]

In the meantime, I headed off towards the first handover and to take pictures of the punters on the first leg, being quite amused by my mum Jitka losing her pole and paddling backwards with her hands whilst lying face-down on the punting platform. At the first handover, the punts all arrived before any of the runners. Rolf was back first, giving his boat a slight advantage over the others. However, it was only a very short time before Helen and Rosemary arrived, sending their punts in close pursuit - then the fourth punt set off once Hally came back from the first leg around Coe Fen.

The next punting leg was probably the hardest one, including the manoeuvring through Dead Man's Corner, and all teams put on one of their better punters. To avoid having to run round the streets to the Meadows myself, I managed to convince one of the leading punts to take me as ballast to the next handover point. Which is how I became a witness to a real pirate fight. As Mark was gaining distance on Julia ahead, the crew at the front tried their hardest to keep him at bay, with some sneaky tactics like blocking the river and holding on to the gaining punt. At one point, moving into the bank and some trees, Mark suddenly decided that the other punt was a little more attractive and transferred there - he says it was a choice between stepping into the water or into the other punt, the latter of which was the nicer option, but I personally reckon that at the time he was still trying to decide which punt had better chances in the race!

The leg finished where Grantchester Meadows began, with the handover at a point where a guy happened to be fishing that day - fortunately he didn't seem to mind four punts mooring in close proximity! Once again, Rolf's punt set off from here with a slight advantage after Edmund finished his leg (handing over to Jitka) ahead of Caroline (handing over to Peter). I left them to their competition for a bit, waiting to see where the other two punts had got to. They arrived at the handover point, both waiting for the pairs of junior competitors to arrive. Having not expected such a great demand for junior legs, I only planned one of them specifically to yellow standard, so teams with two juniors had them running that leg and another one in pairs. Sophie and David finished just ahead of Katy and Edward B, adding to the competition between this pair of punts too. Loading up their incoming runners, and offloading the next ones to go out, the two punts headed off in pursuit of the other two (with a punt-pole from one of those visible over the meadow).

For a while I was running backwards and forwards along the river to see where each of the punts had got to. I managed to point out the location of the pieces of strings to a few competitors (despite my "quite descriptive" control descriptions, it is quite difficult to find a single piece of white string when you are the last one to arrive there!), found out that one of the controls on the junior leg was surrounded by a herd of cows (I really couldn't have known that when putting out the controls the week before!), and even got a brief lift with another punt for one of the punting legs. In the meantime the leading punt managed to gain quite a lot of ground and turned to the downstream legs well ahead of the others. Here I have to mention Thomas and his speedy run round the yellow leg - despite the cows! - which was followed not too much later by the junior members of the other teams.

[a close finish]

Whilst the leading punt was close to starting the final punting leg, I was watching the others set off on the last long running leg. The final competition became quite fierce, as Rolf and Edward L set off running at the same time, with Sue setting off several minutes after them. Downriver, waiting for the runners to finish, all three of the final punts met up, waiting to see how their runners would do. I'm told that one of the controls in a wooded area right on the south end of the Meadows caused some grief, with Ed eventually finding it sneakily and trying to disappear before Rolf noticed! Nevertheless, in the end they both finished almost at the same time, with Rolf putting in a final speedy sprint to jump into his punt first.

Both punts headed off towards the finish, whilst the others waited a few more minutes for Sue to arrive and went off in pursuit. Heading round the streets back to the finish, I could only guess what was happening on the river, but in the end Graham's punt arrived a few moments before Rolf's at the finish, with Bruce punting in the remaining soaked punters to a round of applause some minutes later.

So, in the end:

  1. Mark Collis, Helen Gardner, Caroline, Thomas & William Louth, Peter Woods - 125min
  2. David Bailey, Simon Gardner, Hally Hardie, Graham, Edward & Sophie Louth - 135min
  3. Rolf Crook, Jitka & Katrin Sengerová, Ed Ward, Julia Wotton - 140min
  4. Martin & Edward Bailey, Rosemary Dyer, Bruce Marshall, Sue & Katy Woods - 150min

It was great to see so many people at the event: with a couple of CUOCers and many WAOCers, we were able to race with four punts, which makes the race extra exciting. Maybe next year we should aim to make the event an East Anglian PuntO Champs and invite other EA clubs along?

  3. Matters Arising

The previous AGM had agreed regional levies would be reviewed, dealt with in the Treasurer's report

  4. Chairman's Report

[Reproduced as this edition's Chairman's Chat]

  5. Treasurer's Report for the Year ending 31 December 2003

[read in conjunction with the 2003 Accounts]

The Association's income through capitation and event levies differed little from the previous twelve months, but increased slightly through the hire of SI equipment and SI cards. Whereas the expenditure on SI equipment rose, that on SI cards fell considerably. Income from the Region's hosting of the final of the Compass Sport Cup and Trophy was nearly £600 less than that derived from a heat of the event in the previous year, whilst costs fell by less than £30.

Disappointingly, there were few requests for Junior tour grants, leading to a saving of over £750, and costs incurred by the Junior squad fell by almost £1180. Consequently the Association made a surplus of £1762 for the year.

The Balance Sheet reflects the Association's current healthy financial state. Further expenditure was made on SI equipment during the year, partly necessitated by the need to replace a computer, partly by the replacement of stolen equipment not fully covered by insurance, but partly to improve downloading by the purchase of a thermal printer.

No reduction in charges made by the Association are suggested this year as income is already affected by the decision taken at last year's AGM to reduce the costs of hiring out equipment and cards. This was implemented on 1st January 2004 and its full effect cannot yet be assessed. It is hoped that expenditure on the Junior squad will increase again, and that individual Juniors will ask for assistance if they are selected for tours. The Association also expects to spend heavily on two major events to be staged in the Region later this year, and furthermore needs to maintain its capital reserves for possible future funding of a Regional Development Officer.

The proposal that levies should remain unchanged was accepted unanimously by the meeting

  6. Election of Officers

Paul Lowe took the chair and thanked Lyn West for her work as Chairman.

Lyn was then proposed as Chairman
    - Prop. Ursula Oxburgh, Sec. John T. Ward - Agreed

In addition, Lyn West proposed that a Development Committee be established under Hilary Palmer to work with Jez Middleton to maximise developments in the Region. Its composition and terms of reference would be established later.

  7. British Schools Orienteering Championships

Alan Bedder updated the meeting of developments and the large scale of the event. Major officials were in place, but other regional members would be called upon for the multitude of jobs necessary and as many volunteers as possible were required on the day.

  8. Any Other Business

Ursula Oxburgh said that following a successful Level 1 Coaching course, all clubs now had a Level 1 coach. A Level 2 course would be held in October, clubs were asked to give their full support to delegates. Her aim was to provide coaching for seniors as well as juniors.

The meeting closed at 13.25
