Editorial
I know that it's slightly late for a winter edition, at least according to the calendar, but it's definitely still winter as far as the weather is concerned - both of my last two events have seen snow falling. While not the most pleasant conditions to run in, it should at least be good preparation for the Varsity Match in Stockholm in a few weeks' time...
After taking a winter break from orienteering for about six weeks around Christmas, the busiest part of the season has arrived in a hurry, with plenty of big events to look forward to. Anyone who was at JK97 will be looking forward to the British Championships in April, and it's now only a few weeks until the JK - I'm sure that many East Anglians will be making the short journey across to the West Midlands.
I hope you all have good runs there, but remember that possibly the most important event of the weekend will be happening indoors, at the BOF AGM. There is going to be a lively discussion about the latest membership proposals, as the executive try to keep to their ambitious timetable against some vocal opposition - I'm sure that they won't let a film showing cut things short this year!
Whilst a large attendance at the AGM will be a good start on its own, it is important that all members have a good grasp of the issues involved. To start with, the latest BOF proposal (which bears little resemblance to the previous one) can be found at: http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/asp/makepage.asp?PID=MEMBPROP. Essentially they would replace individual membership of BOF with club membership, in a similar fashion to the structure of EAOA as an association of clubs, but with a much more complex way of working out the fees due.
CompassSport subscribers will have seen the detailed article by John Morris about BOF's current position, which is now available online so that everyone can read it: http://www.compasssport.com/John%20Morris%20article.pdf. The same author has also produced a detailed analysis of the shortcomings of BOF's proposal, which can be downloaded from:http://www.nopesport.com/forum/download.php?id=83.
I hope that you will take the time to study these documents and draw your own conclusions, then come to the AGM ready for the debate!
Your comments, articles, reports and pictures are always welcome - please email or post them to me at

Chairman's Chat
I cannot believe we are at the end of February already. Time does gallop by! It seems to have been a good start to the year. There have been plenty of events, both in the region and further afield. I have enjoyed my runs and hope you have too. But I hope you haven't made as many mistakes - I seem to have tried just about every one in the book (and some new ones) including picking up the wrong map on Day 1 of the Thetford Thrash!
The CompassSport round has seen our clubs heading in different directions. Provisionally SOS has won the Trophy section of SE round quite convincingly. The new scoring system seems to have helped them. I haven't seen the results from the Leicester round.
Out of the forest, the membership debate rumbles on. Although the view was that the majority of the membership supported the original proposal effectively removing club only membership, BOF Management Committee recognized that there was a significant minority strongly opposed to it - we managed a high profile! The upshot is a radical new proposal which, although it does have shortcomings, I think EAOA clubs could work within. The full paper is available on the BOF website.
It is obvious to all that the main driving force to any change is income. The question that I am continually asked - is what do we need the extra money for? To fund the Strategic Plan! This was agreed by BOF Council early last year. The aims are laudable - the development of orienteering with the aim of growing the membership. However a workshop attended by Keith Downing was critical of some of the initiatives. Certainly some of these seemed impractical as far as EAOA clubs were concerned. However I was a fairly lonely critical voice at the BOF Council meeting. We must continue to make our views known. There can be no expectation that the membership is willing to fund any shortfall between income and expenditure. I do urge members to follow the debate and express your views to me, to BOF Councillors and to BOF Management.
The AGM is approaching and with it the election of said BOF Councillors. I have been nominated for one of these four BOF Councillors. I regard myself as an ordinary club orienteer, typical of the majority of our membership and the volunteers essential to our sport. From personal experience I understand the needs of families; the West family started orienteering in 1992 as an activity to share. Through my own children and involvement with junior orienteers from club to elite level, I appreciate their needs.
I was flattered by the level of support from the EAOA committee when I expressed my intention to stand. I hope that support extends to members and would ask you to make the effort to vote, either by attending the AGM at the JK on March 27th or by using your proxy vote. I believe that I can represent the diverse body of orienteers. Please support me.
CompassSport Cup and Trophy
As it was not East Anglia's turn to host a regional round this year, EA clubs were split between two venues in adjacent regions, at Banstead Heath in Surrey and Belvoir in Leicestershire. Congratulations to SOS, who have once again qualified for the Trophy final. The team scores from both were:

The final results for the 2004 EAGAL are listed below - congratulations to all the winners! There were six nominated events during the year, at Highlodge Warren, Swaffham, Warden Warren, Hatfield Forest, Ickworth Park and Thorndon Park. Your four best scores count towards the overall total, and you also need to have competed in at least three of the events. Who is the best orienteer in East Anglia?
During a recent discussion with a member of my athletics club, I suggested he should give orienteering a go. He said he thought it might be fun, but maybe something he could do when he was injured, and couldn't be doing any 'serious' running. Like many others, he viewed O as a recreational activity, and was only really interested in serious competition. I tried to assure him that orienteering is a real sport, and that he might be surprised at how fast the top guys are. When I suggested that top orienteers could probably do a 10k faster than him (35 mins), he wanted an example. "Who's the best local orienteer?" he asked.
This is what got me thinking. How do you answer this question? My first reaction was to see who won the M21L course at the East Anglian champs. The trouble with this is that only seven people did this course last year (and it is being ageist and sexist). Of course, juniors, vets and ladies can enter the M21L if they wish, but in so doing, they would be forfeiting the chance to win their own class. I think it is one of the problems with orienteering that we are far too keen to divide competition up into as many classes as possible. This might be better at national events, but at badge events in East Anglia it often means you end up competing against only a handful of people.
Having scanned through last year's results, I think the best event to pick the EA champ from last year was the CompassSport Cup qualifier. This event seemed to attract more of the top local competitors than any other event, and interestingly the top 5 places were filled by 5 different age classes. I would say that the traditional EA champs ought to be renamed the 'EA age-group champs' and that the title of overall EA champion should go to the winner of a colour-coded event such as the CSC, where everyone can run the same course.
Junior Points East
James Lyne reports from the Regional Squads' training weekend at Lakeside (Windermere) before Christmas:
I have been able to attend Lakeside three times, and this unfortunately was to be my last time. It is a national training weekend open to all 16s also giving competent second year 14s a chance to train for the weekend.
Early on a Friday afternoon in late November, the East Anglian Junior Squad of 6 (Jo West, Nina Tant, Mark Chalkley, Simon Gardner, Ed Louth and myself) embarked on the seven hour journey up to the heart of the Lake District to Lakeside YMCA that would be the 'base camp' for a weekend's training in some of the world's finest orienteering terrain. After a late arrival, the squad was glad to hear that they had been given inside accommodation, rather than the much colder isolated huts!
Early the next morning, the organisers of the weekend introduced themselves and then the squads were free to split and discuss the day's training program. After copying the maps up, the squad drove several kilometres down the road to High Dam, an area previously used for World Cup races. A long uphill walk to the start awaited us and after a short warm up and stretch, we were ready to start the training.
The undulating, lightly wooded yet marshy terrain proved to be quite runnable, making the first control picking exercise fast and enjoyable. Soon after, we paired up and completed a visualisation exercise, where one person memorised their way to the first control, and then on the way, their partner memorised the next control's route. Close shadowing from the coaches proved helpful, as we were given handy tips throughout. After a well earned lunch break and short relocation exercise as well as another control pick, we made our way back to Lakeside where a surprise was waiting for us.
Each member of the squad then competed in a sprint race around the small grounds of Lakeside. This 2km sprint encouraged a combination of speed, concentration and the integration of skills practised earlier at High Dam. The competitive nature of the EAJS meant that the stakes were high and Simon Gardner finished in 14:48 beating me, with a time of 15:50 followed by Mark Chalkley in 16:20 who took third place. This sprint race was a great ending for the day, enabling the orienteer to reflect on the techniques learnt as well as getting good views of Lake Windermere while zigzagging across the area to controls feet from the water!
After a presentation from the GB Squad member, Helen Palmer, detailing the interesting and very different intensity of orienteering in Scandinavia, we were free to relax throughout the evening and after copious amounts of free coffee, biscuits and sugar (Mark) tiredness got the better of everyone and we went to sleep.
The next morning after a brief preparation meeting, the squad packed up and left to begin training at Simpson Ground, an area previously used for the training day at the Graythwaite JK 2004. We left with a view to not returning to Lakeside, so after packing we arrived reasonably late and began training at about 11am, practicing our 'map to ground' analysis with a simple 'follow the line' course where the aim was to count the number of controls placed on the line. This left time to complete one more exercise, so a pairs route choice exercise over 3km distance was selected and the deep marshes provided frequent amusement! After a long walk back to the minibus, we left to return home at 9pm that evening.
On behalf of the EAJS, I would like to thank Eleanor West, Richard Barker and Heather Sears as well as all of the weekend's organisers for helping to organise the coaching and courses. Also, a special thanks to Geoff Pye for his kindness in driving the squad to and fro. I strongly recommend that any younger members of the EAJS attend Lakeside when they are old enough as I have definitely found it beneficial to my orienteering!

The Icenian Trophy, this year celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, is awarded annually to the best-placed club at CUOC's annual public event. This year's scoring scheme is unchanged from last year (full details on the CUOC website), the winner having the lowest overall sum of times behind the winner for a portfolio of 10 classes, including juniors and seniors of both sexes. Third place goes to WAOC (22:14) just behind last year's winners SOS (18:53), but the undisputed champions this year are NOR (2:56). The trophy was presented to NOR at their CompassSport Cup round at Belvoir.

Varsity Match Preview
Just like every spring, an important race is coming up for CUOC members: the annual Varsity Match against our Oxford University counterpart, OUOC. You could see it as the orienteering equivalent of the Boat Race, I suppose (we all know that the Orienteering Varsity Match is, of course, much more important than the Boat Race, it's just that the rest of the country haven't quite realised it yet!). With the event coming up soon, here's a preview of what the student orienteers in EA will be up to.
After a couple of Varsity Matches in Britain, the event will return to Sweden this year, organised by DrongO's Eric and Ann Roller, with the help of their Swedish home club, Järfälla OK. After a search for a free weekend in the busy spring O calendar, the Varsity Match will be held over the weekend of 19th/20th March, with most of us going out to Sweden for a couple of days either side to do some training. The early spring date raised some concerns along the lines of "won't there still be snow on the ground at the time?". So perhaps Cambridge's selection race, the Colour Coded event at Millward's Park, wasn't such bad practice for the weather at all! [For those of you who weren't there, there was an early issue with control boxes not working, meaning that many people waited in the cold - with some snow falling - at the start for quite a bit. Having been tempted by the brief sunny spell and not taken my thermal top, I only really "defrosted" by the time I got to control 4 or 5!]
![[snowy Swedish forest]](sweden_snow.jpg)
The actual Varsity Match is contested by six men and five women, selected by the Cambridge and Oxford captains. The total time of the fastest four runners in the men's race and the fastest three runners in the women's race are added together, and whichever club has the lower total time wins. Whilst the Cambridge teams are still to be announced, here's a bit of a preview as to who they might be...
Over the last few years, Oxford seem to have been managing to attract some top orienteers for some reason; with Pippa Whitehouse having just left, this year Cambridge's women are faced with Cerys Manning, a British Junior Squad member, who made her first university orienteering impression by winning CUOC's SprintO back in November (beating DrongO and previous year's winner Rachael Elder to the trophy). Meanwhile, Becky Carlyle, who seems to be getting faster, is still in Oxford this year and ready to give her best in her third (and last) Varsity Match. Nevertheless, with a number of experienced female orienteers and a very close selection race, it is looking like we may well give Oxford a tighter finish than they might expect. In fact, with several competent orienteers hoping to be in the selected five, Club Captain Rosemary Dyer is having a difficult time choosing the team. In no particular order, there is:
- Rosemary herself (home club BOK), winner of the selection race, who has been in the A team in four previous VMs and was the third scorer in the 2002 Swedish VM;
- Ali Ingleby (home club DEE), a third year who has been on the scoring team in the VM for the past two years;
- Blanka Sengerová (home club WAOC), last year's captain and first Cambridge runner home at the VM, who also has previous Swedish VM experience from 2002;
- Anya Crocker (home club DEE), JK 2004 class winner (W20L) who is a first year scientist and had a storming run at the selection race, as well as a well-earned second place in the inter-college orienteering competition;
- Nicola Robertson (home club SOS), in her second year at Cambridge, she was selected for the A team at last year's VM on Wimbledon Common and took part in some of the WOC spectator races in the summer for experience of Swedish terrain;
- Elspeth Ingleby (home club DEE), also in her first year at Cambridge, who has been said to be the better navigator of her and her older sister Ali; and
- Barbara Drew (home club MDOC), also following her older sister (Cath) to Cambridge.
I'm bound to be a bit biased, because I have a slight personal interest in the selection of the women's team (!), but of course there is also the men's team to consider. Oxford once again have a star runner in Ed Catmur. In Sweden in 2002, however, Ed managed to get so distracted by Cambridge runner Wayne Patrick catching up with him that he didn't quite get the result he'd hoped for. Since then Oxford have always set him off as their first runner to avoid any distraction! As for the rest of Oxford's team, there are some more and some less experienced orienteers Cambridge's men will have to face. With the men's team having looked slightly bleak earlier in the year when we were even struggling to fill the six places, it's not looking too bad at the moment. The men who might be facing Oxford include:
- Ian Elder (home club CLOK), this year's men's captain, who earned his first Half-Blue last year for being the second Cambridge runner home just ahead of last year's men's captain Ashley Bown;
- Alan Elder (home club CLOK), who has decided to remain in Cambridge for a PhD and has just come back from spending a term in the USA - he has run in the A team in four previous VMs including the 2002 event at Hellasgården;
- Edmund Ward, previously a cross-country runner, who only really got involved in orienteering last year in his fourth year as an undergraduate - his results have improved much with experience, including a very good result at the selection race;
- Niall Inverarity (home club INT), who ran in Cambridge's A team two years ago, and who ought to have an advantage in Swedish terrain by having learned to navigate in Scotland rather than somewhere like East Anglia;
- Alex Copley, a first year postgraduate who has joined Cambridge from "the Other Place", where he didn't orienteer but did do plenty of cross-country running - he's now decided that orienteering is a bit more interesting, and the cross-country background has certainly helped him secure some good placings in recent events;
- Tim Bagguley (home club NOC), a first year who appeared out of nowhere (perhaps he was too busy studying?) to take second place in the men's race at the inter-college competition - he has much experience competing as a junior for NOC and Nottingham High School, having represented BSOA as part of Nottingham High at the WSOC 2002 in Portugal;
- Mark Morris (formerly BUOC), who has come to Cambridge for a one year course this year; and
- Ben Greenhalgh, a second year who only really took up orienteering after coming to University and has been getting faster and more accurate recently, but has suffered from an ankle injury this term, which has hampered his training.

Harlow Sprint
Those of you who were there to watch the Junior European Cup sprint race at Harlow Town Park last October, or just heard the subsequent reports, may be interested to know that CHIG are going to re-run the same courses as an open event on Saturday 9th April. Come along and see how close you can get to the 11:24 (men) and 12:28 (women) winning times!
Photo O
In case there's anyone else that's struggling with this year's CompassSport Photo O, you may like to try this slightly easier one in a more East Anglian setting. It's a separate pdf file [600kB] so that the map will be the right size if you print it out:

P.S. Much as I'd like to offer free entry to the Fenland Five Days as a prize, there isn't one, so you'll just have to make do with enjoying the challenge...
